A heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded in KwaZulu-Natal after a late-night car crash on the N2 near Amatikulu claimed the lives of two young children and left their pregnant mother fighting for her life.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night, just as the family was walking home along the highway. According to IPSS Medical Rescue, the scene was devastating. “On arrival, paramedics found a pregnant woman and her two sons had been hit by a vehicle,” said spokesperson Samantha Meyrick.

The boys, aged just 6 and 10, tragically died at the scene from their injuries. Their mother sustained critical injuries and had to be stabilised by advanced life support medics before being rushed to hospital for urgent care.

The vehicle involved in the accident was found a distance from the impact site, and authorities are now investigating the cause of the crash.

A Week of Sorrow in KZN

This isn’t the first fatal crash to hit the province this month. Just days ago, a family of five, including a toddler and a two-month-old baby, lost their lives in a separate accident on the R66 in the Dokodweni area of Gingindlovu. Seven others, mostly children, were injured and required immediate medical care.

KZN Transport and Human Settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya expressed the department’s grief, saying, “After what has been a relatively safe winter holiday, it’s devastating to receive reports of such horrific crashes.”

A Grim Reminder

Both incidents serve as stark reminders of the fragility of life on South African roads. The deaths of these children and their family members have sent shockwaves through their communities and reignited calls for stronger road safety measures, especially for pedestrians on rural highways.

As investigations continue, the families affected are left to deal with unimaginable loss.
