Weekend Chill Incoming: Gauteng to See Showers and a Temperature Dip

Brace yourself, Gauteng the sunshine is taking a backseat this weekend.
Gauteng residents planning a lazy brunch, outdoor market stroll or Saturday soccer match might want to add a hoodie and umbrella to their plans. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast a cooler, wet weekend across the province and Joburg and Pretoria are both in for light rain and shifting skies.
Saturday: From Sun to Sprinkles
If you wake up in Pretoria on Saturday to clear skies, don’t be fooled, it won’t last. Light showers are expected to creep in from around 2pm. The city will warm up to a high of 23°C, dipping to a minimum of 10°C. Winds will stay light, with a maximum speed of 10km/h, and there’s a 30% chance of rain, totalling around 3mm.
Johannesburg follows a similar pattern. Locals can expect a crisp morning with clear skies and a high of 19°C. But by early afternoon, the clouds will roll in and rain is on the cards, especially heading into the evening.
For those planning to attend outdoor events or make a trip to the Neighbourgoods Market or a Soweto street gig, best take a raincoat and keep an eye on the skies.
Sunday: Early Rain, Chilly Vibes
Sunday morning kicks off with some leftover drizzle before drying up by mid-morning. Pretoria will hover between 10°C and 20°C, while Johannesburg gets the colder end of the stick, starting at 8°C and maxing out at 17°C.
The rest of the day will be mostly clear to partly cloudy, offering a gentle break from the Saturday sprinkles. Both cities may still carry 3mm of rain in the forecast, but this will likely fall in the early hours.
A Note on Winter’s Whims
This latest weather turn comes as no surprise to long-time Gautengers. July’s tail end is infamous for deceptive mornings that quickly flip, sunny breakfasts turning to grey afternoons, and chilly winds sneaking up on you in the shade.
On X (formerly Twitter), local users were already swapping weekend plans:
“Cancel the picnic, I’m officially hibernating this weekend. Cold + rain = binge watch & blanket,” wrote one user.
“Joburg winter pretending it’s spring then hitting us with that cold front outta nowhere again 😤,” added another.
So, What Should You Do This Weekend?
If you’re heading out, plan for layers. Morning sunshine may tempt you into short sleeves, but by late afternoon, a warm jacket will be your best friend. And whether you’re hitting a mall, market, or just visiting family, pack an umbrella, especially on Saturday.
But for many, this could be the perfect excuse to slow down. Brew a strong cup of rooibos, pull out that book you’ve been meaning to finish, or tuck into a homemade Sunday potjie.
Gauteng’s weekend weather is serving a typical winter mix, part chilly, part cloudy, with a chance of showers. Stay warm, stay dry, and maybe keep the braai for another weekend.
