MK and DA Join Forces to Demand Probe Into Tshwane Water Tanker Spending
MK and DA Unite Over Water Tanker Spending Concerns
Pressure is mounting on Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya as political parties MK and the Democratic Alliance (DA) join forces to demand transparency and accountability over the city’s alleged overspending on water tankers.
MK spokesperson Abel Tau expressed outrage at what he described as massive mismanagement.
“She cannot allow that more than double is being spent on water tankers,” Tau said, accusing the city of large-scale looting.
“We will approach the Public Protector and mobilise the community to push for accountability over the money spent on water tankers.”
DA Demands Investigation Over Missing Invoices
The DA’s Tshwane mayoral candidate, Cilliers Brink, confirmed that his party had filed a complaint with the Public Protector to investigate potentially unverified water tanker payments.
“The mayor didn’t deny excessive spending but shifted part of the blame to previous administrations,” Brink said.
“Moya wants us to believe that on taking office, the ANC-EFF-ActionSA coalition discovered water tanker invoices from previous years, which they then paid.”
Brink questioned whether the city had valid purchase orders confirming that services were both required and delivered before issuing payments. According to sources with access to Tshwane’s records, only R381 million out of R777 million spent has matching purchase orders.
Public Reaction and Political Fallout
Social media has erupted with mixed reactions. Many residents expressed frustration over the city’s water management inefficiencies, while others criticised the alleged lack of financial oversight in municipal spending.
Political analysts suggest the MK-DA collaboration is significant because it signals cross-party consensus on the need for accountability, putting additional pressure on Mayor Moya and the ANC-led coalition.
“Overspending on essential services like water tankers affects every resident. Accountability isn’t optionalit’s urgent,” one resident commented online.
Background: Water Tanker Spending in Tshwane
Tshwane has long relied on water tankers to supply areas with insufficient municipal water infrastructure, particularly informal settlements and drought-affected zones. While the service is critical, escalating costs and unverified spending have raised red flags among both opposition parties and civil society.
MK and DA have now pledged to push for a formal investigation, with possible involvement from the Public Protector to ensure transparency and public trust.
As scrutiny intensifies, Mayor Moya faces mounting pressure to explain the discrepancies and prove that the R777 million expenditure was legitimate and properly documented.
