The countdown is on for drivers in KwaZulu-Natal. If you’re still cruising around with the old-style licence plate on your vehicle, you have until November 30 to make the switch to the new system. After this deadline, driving with an old plate will be an offence, and you could be slapped with a fine.
The provincial Department of Transport is urging all motorists to visit their nearest licensing office to get the new plates fitted. The key thing to remember is that once the migration period ends, your old licence number will be deemed invalid, making you non-compliant with the National Road Traffic Act.
The process is designed to be straightforward:
For everyone: Visit your nearest Licensing Office to have the old number plate changed.
If you’re renewing: If your vehicle licence disc is up for renewal, your plates will be changed automatically as part of the process.
The message from the Department is clear: “Failure to migrate timeously will lead to members of public getting fined as this will become a violation of the National Road Traffic Act.”
Switching the physical plate is only half the job. Once you have your new licence number, it is crucial to update your records with several key parties to avoid any future hassles:
Your Car Insurer: Inform them immediately. Failure to do so could complicate or even invalidate an insurance claim.
Your Bank: If you are still paying off a car loan, your bank needs the updated vehicle information.
Tracking Company: If your vehicle has a tracking device, ensure the company has the new plate number.
Petrol Card Provider: Update your details if you have a fuel card linked to your vehicle.
With the deadline looming, the best advice is not to delay. Beating the last-minute rush to licensing offices will save you time, stress, and money. Get it done now to ensure you stay on the right side of the law.
