Alleged Mastermind Behind Westbury Shooting in Court
Johannesburg is still reeling from the tragic mass shooting in Westbury that claimed the lives of two teenagers on October 21, 2025. On Monday morning, a 36-year-old man believed to be the orchestrator of the attack is expected to make his first appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed that the suspect was arrested in the Westbury area on Friday. Authorities believe he played a central role in the deadly incident that has shaken the local community.
The Attack That Shook Westbury
The victims, 18-year-old Tigan du Plessis and 17-year-old Diegan Ryters, were among seven teenagers approached by four assailants on foot along Croesus Street. Gunfire erupted, leaving the two teens dead at the scene while the remaining five were rushed to hospital.
Police have confirmed that two of the injured teenagers have since been discharged. The suspect faces two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.
In a related development, a 20-year-old man was also arrested in Diepkloof, appearing in court on Friday. His bail application is set for Thursday, as investigations continue into the identities and whereabouts of the other attackers.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Westbury residents have expressed shock and grief over the shootings, with many calling for swift justice. Social media has been flooded with tributes to the victims, alongside discussions about youth violence in Johannesburg.
Brigadier Muridili urged the public to assist with the investigation.
“The SAPS urges anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to call the Crime Stop line at 08600 10111. Callers can remain anonymous,” she said.
With the alleged mastermind now in custody and investigations ongoing, police hope to bring the remaining suspects to justice. Communities in Westbury and surrounding areas are calling for heightened safety measures and continued vigilance, highlighting the broader issue of gun violence affecting South African youth.
This case underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing gang-related and spontaneous acts of violence in Johannesburg neighborhoods.
