Brown Mogotsi Survives Vosloorus Shooting as SAPS Intensifies Investigation
Eleven Bullets, No Blood: Mogotsi Escapes Attack
Controversial businessman and political fixer Brown Mogotsi narrowly survived an attempted murder in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, on Monday night. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that around 11 bullets were fired at the small Chevrolet sedan Mogotsi was travelling in at approximately 10 pm.
National spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe told journalists at Vosloorus Police Station that, remarkably, Mogotsi was unharmed. “Looking at the car, we don’t see any blood or any indication that Mr Mogotsi was injured,” she said. “Police officers who attended the crime scene confirmed he did not sustain any bullet wounds.”
The shooting occurred in Vosloorus Extension 25, allegedly carried out by occupants of a white bakkie. SAPS has seized the Chevrolet for forensic analysis, and ballistic experts are examining the firearms used, hoping to determine whether they are linked to other violent incidents in the area.
Mogotsi in the Eye of a Storm
Mogotsi, a North West businessman, has been at the centre of several high-profile investigations. He was named in testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry for alleged ties to senior police and political figures. In October, police raided his business premises in Seweding village near Mahikeng as part of ongoing probes into corruption and political interference.
The attempted hit came just hours after Mogotsi engaged with the Madlanga Commission, which is probing allegations of criminality and political interference in South Africa’s law-enforcement system. Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels expressed deep concern for Mogotsi’s safety.
“Certainly, the Commission is concerned about these developments,” Michaels said. “We are worried for the safety of Mr Mogotsi and all other witnesses appearing before the Commission.”
A Pattern of Threats Against Witnesses
The attack on Mogotsi has intensified worries about the safety of witnesses linked to the Commission. Just weeks ago, another witness, identified only as Khumalo, reportedly suffered a poisoning incident shortly after testifying in Pretoria, prompting a review of witness protection measures.
These incidents have reignited debates over whether individuals assisting the inquiry are being specifically targeted to silence them. Analysts say that the combination of alleged political interference, corruption, and organised crime creates a dangerous environment for key witnesses.
SAPS Vows Action
SAPS has reassured the public that the investigation into Mogotsi’s attempted murder remains a top priority. Officers continue to comb the scene for evidence, while forensic experts work to trace the origins of the firearms.
For the people of Vosloorus, a township with a history of violent incidents, the shooting has been a stark reminder of the risks that come with high-stakes politics and criminal investigations in South Africa. Social media has lit up with reactions, many expressing shock and concern for Mogotsi, while others debate the implications for the Madlanga Commission and witness safety nationwide.
As the investigation continues, authorities and the Commission face renewed pressure to safeguard those willing to testify, while the public watches closely to see whether justice, and safety, can be guaranteed in the midst of such high-profile, politically charged cases.
