In the tumultuous world of South Africa’s newest political giant, a quiet but fierce internal battle is brewing in KwaZulu-Natal. Willies Mchunu, the provincial convener of the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), has issued a stark warning against ill-discipline, telling disgruntled members that “protesting against a leader is tantamount to protesting against the organisation.” This comes amid confirmed complaints and meetings against him, which party insiders directly link to his most consequential act: clamping down on the abuse of party funds.

Mchunu confirmed he is aware members have protested at the MKP offices about him but stated he doesn’t know the specifics, as they never engaged him directly. “I would say it would have been better if they had first engaged the matter in a meeting before protesting,” he remarked, framing the dissent as an attack on the party itself.

The Root of the Revolt: A Locked Treasury

Sources within the party, however, paint a clearer picture. According to them, the campaign to oust Mchunu intensified precisely because he “introduced strict governance controls that eliminated any abuse of party resources.” One member was blunt: “Previous leaders acted without accountability… Willies came in, he introduced stability and strict financial controls, which then curbed the abuse of funds.”

The implication is clear: Mchunu’s “sin” was turning off the tap of uncontrolled spending. “They want to revive the situation where they were doing as they pleased with party funding,” the source added. His strict measures, meant to instill stability and accountability, have made him a target for those who benefited from the previous lax system.

Party Leadership Dismisses the Drama

When approached for comment, national MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela took a dismissive stance, stating the party was “not aware of this matter” and would not entertain issues concerning “ill-disciplined members,” suggesting internal squabbles are a distraction from more serious national matters.

The standoff reveals a critical stress test for the MKP. Is it an organisation built on structures and accountability, or one vulnerable to the personal gripes of those denied easy access to resources? Mchunu’s warning is more than a personal defence; it’s a bid to define the party’s culture. His fate may determine whether the MKP can manage its own internal treasury before it can credibly promise to manage the country’s.
