Shock Killing in Mankweng: Polokwane Security Boss Gunned Down as Police Hunt Suspects
A Late-Night Shooting That Shook the Community
Residents of Mankweng woke up to grim news this week after a well-known Polokwane-based security company owner was shot dead in what police have described as a targeted killing.
The 43-year-old businessman was killed late on Tuesday night, just before midnight, in Unit A of Mankweng, an area that falls under the Capricorn District and is usually busy with student and residential life due to its proximity to the University of Limpopo.
By morning, the story had spread quickly across Polokwane, sparking shock and unease in a community already grappling with rising concerns around violent crime.
What Police Found at the Scene
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, officers responding to a murder complaint arrived to find a white Ford Ranger double cab with Gauteng registration plates parked in the middle of the road.
Next to the vehicle lay the victim’s body, with a fatal gunshot wound. Police found some of his personal belongings, including cellphones and a laptop, still inside the bakkie, raising questions about whether robbery was the motive.
A murder case was immediately opened at Mankweng police station before being handed over to the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, which is now leading the investigation.
Motive Still a Mystery
At this stage, police have not identified any suspects, and the motive for the killing remains unclear.
The victim’s profile as a security company owner has added another layer of concern, particularly in Limpopo, where private security firms often work closely with communities and businesses to combat crime.
On local social media groups, residents expressed fear and frustration, with some questioning how someone involved in the security industry could be so brazenly targeted.
Police Commissioner Condemns the Killing
Limpopo provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has condemned the murder and ordered that all available resources be deployed to track down those responsible.
Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting and whether the victim was followed or ambushed.
Call for Public Assistance
Police have appealed to the public for help, urging anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
