Dramatic chase through Joburg ends in deadly shootout and rescue

On Wednesday evening, what began as a hijacking attempt quickly spiralled into a high-speed chase involving the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS), ending in a deadly shootout and a dramatic rescue.

A targeted patrol turns into a pursuit

Authorities say officers had been tracking a group suspected of carrying out hijackings and kidnappings along Elm Road an area that has increasingly come under scrutiny from both police and residents.

Acting on intelligence, the team moved into position.

At around 8:30pm, they spotted a vehicle matching the description: a silver-grey Opel Astra.

Moments earlier, the suspects had allegedly pulled a woman from her Fiat and forced her into their car.

What followed was a rapid escalation sirens on, engines revving, and a chase tearing through the suburb.

Gunfire on the road

As officers closed in, the suspects reportedly opened fire, turning the pursuit into a life-threatening confrontation.

The chase ended abruptly when the suspects’ vehicle lost control, slamming into a roadside barrier and down an embankment.

But the danger didn’t end there.

A shootout broke out in the aftermath, leaving three suspects fatally wounded. Inside the vehicle, police recovered two firearms along with items belonging to the victim.

In a rare and fortunate outcome, the woman at the centre of it all was rescued unharmed.

A separate robbery shakes Pretoria

While the dust was still settling in Crystal Park, another dramatic crime unfolded in Brooklyn earlier that same day.

At a jewellery store inside a local shopping mall, a group of five suspects executed a coordinated robbery.

According to police, one suspect entered the store posing as a customer before forcing entry for the rest of the group. Display cases were smashed, and jewellery was quickly scooped up.

The suspects didn’t stop there they hijacked a vehicle to make their escape.

Chase and arrests in the CBD

The getaway was short-lived.

Police, working alongside private security, tracked the suspects into Pretoria Central, where another confrontation unfolded.

A shootout broke out during the pursuit, leaving a security officer injured. Three of the suspects were also wounded and taken to hospital under police guard.

All five suspects, aged between 32 and 38, were arrested.

Authorities recovered the stolen jewellery, the hijacked vehicle, and a firearm with ammunition.
