Mpumalanga raid in Nelspruit seizes R2.06m in counterfeit goods, multiple arrests

Police and regulatory teams in Mpumalanga seized more than R2 million in suspected counterfeit and illicit goods and made multiple arrests during a coordinated operation in Nelspruit on 11 June 2026.

Search-and-seizure operation across Nelspruit

The operation was carried out pursuant to search-and-seizure warrants at several locations in Nelspruit, including Samora Machel Drive (N4), Anderson Street, the corner of Anderson and Henshall Streets, Kykoedie Street and Valencia Street. The raid targeted the trade and distribution of counterfeit and illicit goods.

What was recovered

Police said the multi-disciplinary team seized a range of suspected counterfeit and illicit items, including branded clothing, footwear, personal care products, food products and household items. Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, police spokesperson, said:

“During the operation, members seized a substantial quantity of suspected counterfeit and illicit goods, including branded clothing, footwear, personal care products, food products, and household items.”

A total of 3 339 counterfeit and illicit items were seized, with an estimated value of R2 062 050, the police said.

Arrests, closures and other enforcement actions

The operation was led by the Mpumalanga Counterfeit Task Team and involved Crime Intelligence, the Tactical Response Team (TRT) and SARS Customs. Captain Nonyane-Mpe reported a number of enforcement outcomes:

  • Six undocumented foreign nationals were arrested.
  • One arrest was recorded for the employment of an illegal foreign national.
  • Nine traffic fines were issued.
  • Three business premises were closed for non-compliance with Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Four pallets of liquor were detained by SARS for further investigation.
  • Additional items, including Pampers products and tissues, were seized pending further verification and investigation.

Investigation and official response

Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, commended the participating stakeholders for their coordinated efforts. Police said investigations are ongoing and that additional charges may be considered as enquiries continue.
