Gauteng police have arrested members of a kidnapping syndicate after a R2 million ransom demand following the abduction of a woman in Edenvale. The operation recovered two victims and led to multiple arrests in Parktown.

Kidnapping and ransom demand

Police said a 47-year-old woman was kidnapped while on her way to the gym in Edenvale on 17 June 2026. Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a police spokesperson, said:

“The following day, the victim’s husband received a ransom demand of R2 million for the release of the victim.”

Intelligence-led surveillance and arrests

Authorities identified two vehicles suspected of involvement and placed them under surveillance. On 23 June 2026, a drop-off was arranged and law enforcement teams moved in when two suspects arrived to collect the ransom.

Police said the operation resulted in arrests in Parktown, with three additional suspects detained not far from the drop-off area. The suspects were found carrying multiple cellphones, police reported.

Victims rescued and charges

Further investigations led to the rescue of two victims who had sustained minor injuries; they received medical attention and were reunited with their families. One of the rescued victims was identified by police as a 44-year-old woman who had reportedly been kidnapped on 19 June 2026 in Germiston.

Police said the suspects, aged between 28 and 45, are expected to appear in court on charges of kidnapping and extortion.

Police response

Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Gauteng, praised the collaborative effort. He said:

“This collaboration has proven to be fruitful, and we will continue to work together in the fight against crime and maximize police visibility for the safety of the people of Gauteng.”

Colonel Nevhuhulwi described the arrests as the result of an “intelligence-driven operation” that allowed law enforcement to “strategically position themselves and pounced upon the two suspects who came to collect the ransom money.”
