Police have arrested 16 suspects after a brazen double business robbery at Goldfields Mall in Welkom that netted about R900,000 in luxury goods, authorities said.

What happened

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said the incident unfolded on Wednesday evening at around 7.45pm when armed suspects stormed two clothing chain stores inside the shopping centre, ransacking the outlets and fleeing with high‑value merchandise including luxury clothing, watches and perfumes.

Immediate response and pursuit

Private security teams were first on the scene and launched a high‑speed pursuit after the suspects split into multiple getaway vehicles. During the chase, gunfire was exchanged between the fleeing suspects and responding security forces. No injuries or fatalities were reported, Kareli said.

Multi‑provincial operation and arrests

Authorities described the breakthrough as a “seamless, swift, and cross‑provincial collaboration” that resulted in the arrest of 16 suspects linked to the robbery.

The first arrests were made between Welkom and Odendaalsrus, where four suspects were apprehended and a large quantity of stolen stock recovered. Police also seized a white Kia Sportage and a white Nissan NP300 bakkie allegedly used in the robbery.

Intelligence indicated additional suspects had fled toward neighbouring provinces. Acting on a tip‑off, police in Orkney and Stilfontein intercepted a white Toyota Quantum minibus carrying nine suspects and recovered four firearms and ammunition from the vehicle. Kareli said the firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing.

Officers in Villiers intercepted a blue Hyundai i20, leading to the arrest of the remaining three suspects.

Charges and next steps

All 16 suspects, aged between 20 and 44, are in custody and face charges of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear soon in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.

Police reaction

Police praised the coordinated response, highlighting the effectiveness of joint operations between SAPS units and private security in disrupting criminal networks that operate across provincial lines.
