The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that Term 2 progress reports may not be issued before schools close on 26 June 2026 after the South African Schools Administration and Management System (SA‑SAMS) stopped working.

GDE gives timetable for fix

Speaking to The Citizen, GDE spokesperson Onwabile Lubhelwane said the technical problems would be resolved in “less than 5-7 days maximum” and that “after that, the parents will be able to receive reports.”

What failed and who it affects

The outage affected the SA‑SAMS application, the official software used by the Department of Basic Education to manage learner data, educator and staff information, curriculum tracking, capture learners’ results, and store attendance and marks for reporting.

According to the GDE, the system stopped working on a Friday, creating a provincial challenge for issuing report cards.

Schools and provincial response

Schools have issued notices to parents saying reports will not be provided until the system is fixed. The GDE acknowledged the impact and offered an apology for the inconvenience.

The department added that “CITRIX issues are currently being solved by a technical and competent team.

Further updates

Deputy Director at the GDE, Kgadi Mathatho, said further updates will be communicated as soon as additional information becomes available.

Scale of the system

The GDE noted that Gauteng currently serves over 2.06 million learners across 3 320 schools.
