Pretoria school rugby brawl investigation deepens as racism allegations spark sharp dispute

What began as one of Gauteng’s most anticipated school rugby fixtures has now evolved into a complex investigation involving allegations of racism, assault and failures to prevent violence.

Days after the Noordvaal Cup clash between Hoërskool Menlopark and Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen ended in chaos, both schools have released sharply different versions of events, leaving investigators to determine exactly what unfolded on and around the rugby field.

The incident has reignited wider conversations about behaviour at school sporting events, where fierce rivalries are expected but violence and alleged racial abuse have no place.

EG Jansen says racial abuse fuelled tensions

Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen says it does not condone the conduct of anyone involved in the confrontation and has already launched internal disciplinary proceedings against learners identified in the incident.

The school stressed that violence, racism and any other unacceptable behaviour conflict with its values and code of conduct.

According to information gathered through witness statements, the school alleges that a group of former Hoërskool Menlopark learners had positioned themselves behind the EG Jansen goalposts before kick-off.

The school says statements from witnesses allege that alcohol was consumed by the group and that racist slurs were directed at Black and Coloured players. Among the alleged remarks were the use of the k-word and comments suggesting some players “belong on a farm.”

EG Jansen says several parents reported the alleged behaviour to a Menlopark teacher during the match, requesting that the group be removed because they were allegedly provoking tensions. Another parent reportedly raised similar concerns.

The school further claims one parent submitted a written account stating that her complaint was dismissed and that no action was taken after concerns were raised.

Calls for evidence as investigations continue

Seeking to establish what happened, EG Jansen requested access to security camera footage from Menlopark’s grounds.

According to the school, it was informed that the area where the incident occurred was not covered by available camera footage.

The school says it is continuing to collect witness statements and other evidence while cooperating with the Department of Basic Education and relevant authorities.

A detailed report containing statements and supporting documentation is being prepared for submission as part of the official investigation.

Assault allegation escalated the confrontation

EG Jansen says tensions reached breaking point after one of its rugby players was allegedly pulled over a fence and assaulted.

According to the school’s account, the alleged assault triggered a physical confrontation, with parents stepping in to protect their children as the situation spiralled.

The school says disciplinary processes are now underway against learners involved and reiterated that every pupil is subject to its disciplinary code.

Menlopark firmly rejects racism allegations

Die Hoërskool Menlopark has strongly disputed the allegations made by EG Jansen.

The school says an independent investigation is already at an advanced stage and that evidence reviewed so far, including statements from neutral match officials, does not support claims that racist remarks were made.

Menlopark also questioned why the allegations surfaced several days after the incident, suggesting it would be deeply concerning if the claims were ultimately found to be an attempt to shift responsibility.

The school further emphasised that none of its players, coaches or staff members were involved in the violent altercation.

It says it rejects the allegations and intends to submit the completed findings of its independent investigation to Noordvaal Rugby.
