Vanderbijlpark woman to remain in custody ahead of bail ruling in Emfuleni fraud case

A Vanderbijlpark woman accused in a fraud linked to Emfuleni Local Municipality will remain behind bars until a scheduled bail judgment. The matter returned to Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and the bail ruling has been set for 03 July 2026.

Who is charged and what are the allegations

The accused, 25-year-old Janitha van Reenen-Coetzee, faces a fraud charge involving approximately R424 000. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), she is alleged to have misrepresented herself as an independent agent able to help residents obtain discounts on outstanding municipal accounts.

The NPA says victims gave her money to make discounted payments to the municipality on their behalf, but the funds were allegedly not paid over to the municipality. It is further alleged that Coetzee submitted claims to the municipality on behalf of the victims and that the municipality paid her a total of approximately R424 000, money that was not paid to the intended beneficiaries.

How the alleged fraud came to light

The alleged scheme was identified by the then Financial Officer of Emfuleni Local Municipality, Martha Rantsofu, who flagged suspicious claims totalling R424 000 and reported the matter to her manager. An internal municipal investigation followed and the matter was then reported to police.

Court process and bail history

Coetzee made a brief appearance in court following her arrest last month. She was previously denied bail and launched a new bail bid earlier this month. During the earlier application, the state argued she posed a flight risk and could interfere with witnesses because her residential address could not be independently verified.

“The case of Janitha van Reenen Coetzee has been postponed to 03 July 2026 for bail judgment,”

Tshegofatso Makhudu, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson.

Investigation status

The matter remains under criminal investigation and the accused will remain in custody until the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court delivers its bail judgment on 03 July 2026.
