Gauteng police seize counterfeit goods worth R27.5 million in four-day operation

Police have confiscated counterfeit and illicit goods with an estimated value exceeding R27.5 million following a coordinated enforcement operation carried out across several parts of Gauteng this week.

The large-scale operation targeted businesses and storage facilities believed to be linked to the distribution and storage of counterfeit merchandise, resulting in the seizure of more than 56 000 items.

The four-day initiative, which was conducted between 27 and 30 July, formed part of ongoing efforts to curb illicit trade and protect consumers from counterfeit products entering the local market.

Details shared by the South African Police Service on its official Facebook page show the operation was led by the Gauteng Provincial Counterfeit Unit, working alongside brand protection representatives and other law enforcement partners.

Storage facilities among major targets

Investigators focused on multiple districts, including Tshwane, Johannesburg, the West Rand and Sedibeng, carrying out search-and-seizure operations at shops, business premises and storage facilities.

One of the earliest operations took place in Pretoria Central, where officers executed a search warrant at commercial premises and confiscated 109 counterfeit HP toner cartridges with an estimated value of R327 000.

The operation later moved to Kagiso on the West Rand, where police inspected four shops. Officers seized 1 125 counterfeit and illicit products, including cellphone accessories, consumables, shoes, illicit honey, poison and pharmaceutical products, with an estimated value of R175 910.

Searches continued in Evaton, where officers confiscated a further 129 counterfeit consumables, socks and shoes valued at around R30 668.

Largest seizure made in Randburg and Heidelberg

The biggest breakthrough came during operations targeting storage facilities in Randburg and Heidelberg, where investigators uncovered thousands of suspected counterfeit products.

Supported by members of the Border Police Unit based at City Deep and brand protection representatives, police searched three storage units and seized 10 350 pairs of counterfeit shoes valued at R15.5 million in Randburg.

In Heidelberg, officers confiscated 44 350 counterfeit clothing items and shoes with an estimated value of R11.4 million.

Combined, the Johannesburg and Sedibeng operations accounted for 54 700 counterfeit items worth approximately R26.97 million, making up the overwhelming majority of goods seized during the four-day campaign.

By the end of the operation, authorities had confiscated 56 063 counterfeit and illicit items with a combined estimated value of R27 504 578.

Police said they will continue working with government departments, brand owners and law enforcement partners to identify and dismantle networks involved in the manufacture, storage and distribution of counterfeit merchandise.

Investigations into the seized goods are continuing, and authorities have indicated that further enforcement operations will follow as part of broader efforts to disrupt illicit trade across the province.
