Tiny hermit crab gets unexpected ride from Eastern Cape to Gauteng

A family returning from a holiday in the Eastern Cape got an unexpected surprise when they discovered that they had brought home a very small passenger.

While collecting shells at Kidd’s Beach near East London, the family unknowingly picked up a shell that was still occupied by a tiny hermit crab, as SPCA Randburg reported on Facebook.

It was only after arriving back in Gauteng that they realised what had happened.

Rather than simply leaving the crab where it was or attempting to deal with it themselves, the family contacted the Randburg SPCA for help.

The unexpected rescue quickly turned into a race to find the safest way to get the little traveller back home.

The SPCA contacted wildlife experts and, following advice from wildlife veterinarians, created a temporary environment where the crab could be properly cared for while arrangements were made for its return to Kidd’s Beach.

And the tiny rescue has now been given a suitably memorable name: Shell-vis Presley.

But there is one problem, Shell-vis Presley needs a lift.

The Randburg SPCA is appealing to anyone travelling from Johannesburg or elsewhere in Gauteng towards Kidd’s Beach or the East London area who may be able to transport the crab.

After an accidental detour to Gauteng, the tiny hermit crab is ready to make the journey back to the place where it was found.

Anyone who may be able to assist has been asked to contact the Randburg SPCA.

The unusual case is also a reminder that animal rescue work extends far beyond the dogs and cats most people associate with SPCA shelters.

From injured birds and stranded snakes to orphaned wildlife, and now a hermit crab that accidentally became an interstate traveller, the organisation says every animal that needs help matters.

Even when the animal is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, a rescue can require staff time, specialist advice, transport and careful coordination.

The SPCA says community support makes this work possible and has appealed for donations to help it continue responding to animals in need.

For now, Shell-vis Presley is waiting patiently for a ticket back to the Eastern Cape.
