Intelligence-led operation leads to multiple arrests in Motherwell

According to IOL, the Motherwell Cluster Trio Task Team arrested three suspects and recovered two firearms, live ammunition and items believed to be stolen during an intelligence-driven operation in the Motherwell policing precinct on Tuesday.

Sequence of the operation

Members first arrested a suspect at Mjondolo informal settlement after acting on information about house robberies and an Ikamvelihle business. They then tracked a stolen iPhone to NU 9, linking it to a robbery in NU 7.

Investigators proceeded to Makhotyana Street, where, according to IOL, suspects allegedly resisted police. Officers overpowered the suspects and recovered firearms, ammunition and property allegedly taken during a business robbery at a barber shop.

What was seized and the charges

IOL reports that police confiscated a 9mm firearm loaded with five live rounds and a 9mm short firearm loaded with six live rounds. An iPhone and various other items believed to be connected to prior robberies were also retrieved.

The three suspects, aged 22 to 29, face multiple charges including business robbery, possession of suspected stolen property, and illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Police are verifying the serial numbers of the recovered firearms as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigation and court appearance

According to IOL, detectives continue probing to link the suspects to other serious and violent crimes in the Motherwell Cluster. All three suspects are expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court this week.

Police comment and public appeal

“Recovering illegal firearms significantly disrupts criminal activities and prevents further violence within the community,” Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brig Loyiso Ngalo said, according to IOL.

IOL reports that police encouraged the public to keep providing crime information to help identify suspects, recover stolen property and illegal firearms, and bring perpetrators before the courts.
