Woman killed and 13 injured in three-taxi crash on Nelson Mandela Boulevard

A 60-year-old woman was killed and 13 people were injured when three minibus taxis collided on Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Cape Town on Monday morning. The collision was reported at 7:52am, Cape Town traffic spokesperson Kevin Jacobs said.

What happened

Jacobs said the crash occurred inbound on Nelson Mandela Boulevard before the Browning Road turn-off.

“[We] can confirm a multi-vehicle collision on Nelson Mandela Boulevard inbound before Browning Road earlier today,”

he said.

The spokesperson said a 60-year-old woman was declared deceased at the scene. He also said three people sustained serious injuries and 10 more were treated for slight injuries. Jacobs added that the left lane remained obstructed at this time.

Route and timing

Nelson Mandela Boulevard carries the bulk of the morning commuter traffic into the city bowl and is the main route into the Cape Town city centre from the N2.

Related incident on the N1

The IOL report notes the taxi crash came less than nine hours after a separate crash on the N1 in the Klein Karoo. Western Cape traffic authorities said 21 people died and three others were seriously injured in that collision, which happened on the N1 between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka at about 11:30pm on Sunday.
