Acting police minister announces shutdown of parts of Ekurhuleni after eight women found dead

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has announced plans to shut down parts of Ekurhuleni, especially Kempton Park and surrounding areas, as authorities intensify their response after the discovery of eight bodies across the municipality.

What authorities have said

Speaking at a joint media briefing, Cachalia said authorities were determined to find those responsible.

“I want to give the people of Ekurhuleni and the families the assurance that we will leave no stone unturned to bring the culprits to book,”

he said.

Cachalia said a dedicated investigative team has been established to probe the cases and that police would step up prevention efforts. He said Operation Shanela would be expanded in Kempton Park and surrounding areas and warned residents to expect a significantly increased law-enforcement presence.

On the planned lockdown, Cachalia said:

“Police will lock down this area in the coming weeks,”

and authorities have offered a R400,000 reward for information that could assist investigations.

Where the bodies were found and timing

The reported discoveries include five cases in Kempton Park, two in Olifantsfontein and one in Kwa-Thema. The cases were recorded between July and September and the eight bodies were found across the area over the past two months.

Police warnings to the community

Cachalia urged residents to report anything suspicious but cautioned against spreading unverified claims online, saying rumours and “wild speculation” on social media would not help investigators.
