Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi Gains Support for Hawks Leadership Amid Renewed Crime-Fighting Efforts
Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi receives broad support for Hawks top job as South Africa intensifies efforts to fight organised crime and corruption.
Support Rallies for Mkhwanazi’s Hawks Appointment
Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has emerged as the frontrunner for the national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly referred to as the Hawks, amid renewed pressure to bolster South Africa’s fight against organised crime and corruption. The recommendation, brought forward by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, awaits Cabinet concurrence and signals a decisive moment for the future of law enforcement in the country.
Cabinet Memo Seeks to Cement New Leadership
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has taken concrete steps by submitting a memorandum to Cabinet, formally proposing Mkhwanazi to lead the Hawks. This memorandum is expected to be considered at the earliest scheduled Cabinet session, underscoring the urgency to fill the critical post with an experienced crime-fighter as the country faces persistent crimes that threaten social stability.
Background: Calls for Strong Leadership Intensify
Mkhwanazi captured national attention following a July 2025 media briefing in which he exposed what he described as a sophisticated criminal syndicate operating within South Africa’s criminal justice system. These revelations not only heightened public concern but also catalysed real-world change: President Cyril Ramaphosa subsequently established the Madlanga Commission, an official inquiry that has since led to the arrests of several law enforcement officials.
In the wake of these developments, widespread calls have grown for Mkhwanazi’s mandate to be extended beyond his previous leadership focus in KwaZulu-Natal, reflecting a desire for a nationwide crackdown on organised crime.
Robust Endorsements from Civil Society and Political Leaders
The proposal for Mkhwanazi’s appointment has generated broad support. Forum4SA, a civil society advocacy group, has explicitly welcomed the move. Forum4SA leader Tebogo Mashilompane stressed the need for leadership within the Hawks that is driven by integrity, independence, and professionalism, calling for a renewed commitment to investigating serious crime “without fear, favour, or political interference.”
“We have seen Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi’s work and his public stance on matters relating to crime, corruption and accountability. His record and contributions have brought significant public attention to the urgent need to strengthen the fight against organised crime and corruption in South Africa,” said Mashilompane.
Mashilompane further emphasised that the fight against corruption must not be selective: “Every individual implicated in criminal conduct must be subjected to the law, regardless of their political position, financial influence or status in society.”
Political Support for Change within the Hawks
Political party ActionSA has also expressed support for Minister Cachalia’s recommendation. ActionSA MP Dereleen James asserted that Mkhwanazi’s earlier effortsincluding the 2025 exposure that sparked both the Madlanga Commission and numerous investigationshelped
trigger a sequence of arrests, suspensions, and dismissals among senior police ranks. James argued that these outcomes reflect the type of leadership needed to restore public faith in law enforcement and to ensure accountability at every level.
The Significance for South Africa’s Crime-Fighting Strategy
As the government moves forward, the question of effective leadership within the Hawks remains central to efforts at curbing organised crime and systemic corruption. The national head of the Hawks directs investigations into the country’s most serious crimes, including complex corruption networks and criminal syndicates. Strong, independent leadership is often seen as a key factor in breaking cycles of impunity and systemic criminal activity, especially following revelations regarding the criminal justice system’s vulnerabilities.
The anticipation around the Cabinet’s decision highlights the broader public expectations for decisive change. Many South Africans look to the Hawks and its leadership as critical actors in the fight to uphold justice, promote accountability, and reinforce the rule of law.
Outlook: Awaiting the Cabinet’s Decision
The upcoming Cabinet session, where Cachalia’s memorandum will be considered, is likely to be closely watched by stakeholders across the political spectrum, civil society, and the public. While expectations are high, the ultimate appointment of a new leader for the Hawks will be seen as a litmus test of the government’s resolve to tackle both immediate and long-standing criminal challenges head-on.
Should Mkhwanazi be appointed, it could mark a potential turning pointboth symbolically and practicallyin efforts to strengthen the country’s law enforcement capabilities and to restore trust in key investigative institutions.
