Former SABC presenter Owen Ndlovu kidnapped in Katlehong, found dead

Former SABC sports presenter Owen Ndlovu has been found dead after being hijacked and kidnapped in Katlehong on Tuesday evening, 15 September.

Broadcaster and crime reporter Yusuf Abramjee was among those to report his death on Wednesday, saying Ndlovu had been hijacked and kidnapped in Katlehong the previous night.

SABC News later confirmed that the former sports presenter had died, with his family confirming the news.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the incident happened at about 8pm while Ndlovu was fetching his wife, Portia, from a church service. Three men allegedly approached the couple, with one reportedly armed, before forcing Ndlovu into his Ford Raptor.

His vehicle was later recovered abandoned in Walkerville. EWN reports that Ndlovu’s body was subsequently found in Thokoza.

Family confirms Owen Ndlovu’s death

Residents who discovered the body reported that Ndlovu had suffered gunshot wounds. His wife later identified him at the mortuary, according to The Citizen.

Ndlovu, 54, was known to South African audiences through his work in sports broadcasting, particularly football. He was also involved in music rights activism.

His death has since prompted an outpouring of reaction online, as former colleagues and members of the public mourn a familiar figure in South African broadcasting.

Police have launched a manhunt for three suspects as the investigation continues. Authorities have yet to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
