Three suspected CIT robbers killed in Tshwane shootout, one arrested

The confrontation happened on Monday, 28 September, after a multidisciplinary police and security operation was launched following intelligence about an alleged robbery being planned in the area.

The operation brought together the SAPS Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Airwing and private security companies working through Business Against Crime South Africa.

Police tracked suspected robbery team

According to police, the team spotted a white Hyundai H1 travelling along the R80.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle using blue lights, but the occupants allegedly opened fire.

Police returned fire, leaving three of the suspects fatally wounded.

An AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol were recovered from the Hyundai H1.

Police also arrested another alleged member of the group who was travelling separately in a Toyota Avanza. He was found in possession of a 9mm pistol.

Firearms to undergo ballistic testing

The scene is being processed by forensic experts as investigators work to establish whether more evidence can be recovered.

The firearms seized during the operation will also undergo ballistic testing.

The testing could help investigators determine whether the weapons have previously been used in other crimes.

For residents and motorists travelling through Tshwane, the incident highlights the ongoing police focus on organised robbery operations, particularly those targeting cash-in-transit vehicles.

Police praise joint operation

Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Fred Kekana, praised the multidisciplinary team involved in the operation.

He commended the team for its continued efforts to disrupt CIT robberies and cross-pavement robberies across the province.

The investigation remains ongoing, with forensic processing and ballistic analysis expected to provide further information about the suspects and any possible links to other cases.
