The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and the Northern Cape. The strongest storms are expected to produce heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning.

While the thunderstorms may be short-lived, the report noted that much warmer temperatures are expected across the country as South Africa braces for a strong El Niño. SAWS held a media conference to discuss the El Niño forecast and preparedness plans for the 2026/27 season.
