A man believed to be in his 40s died after a collision between a motor vehicle carrier and a light motor vehicle on the N3 Pietermaritzburg-bound near the Richmond Road off‑ramp in Pinetown. The crash occurred shortly after 11:30pm on Monday.

Emergency crews describe ‘chaos and carnage’

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said medics arrived to find what he described as “chaos and carnage” at the scene, where a car carrier had collided with a light motor vehicle before losing control and hitting a bridge.

On arrival, paramedics assessed the scene and found the driver of the light motor vehicle had sustained major fatal injuries. He was declared deceased at the scene.

Truck driver entrapped and critically injured

Jamieson said the truck driver was found severely entrapped in the wreckage. The eThekwini Fire Department was dispatched and worked for approximately two hours to free him while advanced life support paramedics stabilised the man in the truck cabin.

Once freed, the truck driver who Jamieson said had sustained critical injuries was extricated, placed into an awaiting ALS ambulance and transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

Investigation underway

Jamieson said the events leading up to the crash are unknown. The South African Police Service (SAPS) attended the scene and will investigate the collision.

This report is based on accounts from ALS Paramedics and details published about the incident.
