eThekwini launches WhatsApp chatbot for emergency reporting

Residents in eThekwini can now report emergencies and access important safety information through a new WhatsApp chatbot launched by the municipality.

The platform is available in isiZulu and English and is designed to help residents connect with Disaster Management services, report incidents and access information that could prove critical during emergencies.

eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba officially launched the chatbot, describing it as an example of how technology can improve disaster preparedness and help protect communities.

How the emergency chatbot works

The new platform aims to make it easier for residents to communicate with the municipality during emergencies.

According to the City, reports submitted through the chatbot are expected to strengthen early warning systems, improve incident reporting and support faster emergency response efforts.

Residents can access the chatbot by scanning the QR code displayed on the poster accompanying the municipality’s announcement.

The service is available in two languages, allowing residents to access information in either isiZulu or English.

City urges residents to report emergencies

Xaba encouraged residents to use the platform and play an active role in keeping their communities safe.

“The eThekwini Disaster Management Chatbot demonstrates how technology can be used to save lives and strengthen community resilience. By putting real-time information at residents’ fingertips, we are helping communities stay informed, connected and prepared when disaster strikes,” he said.

The mayor also emphasised that residents have a role to play in disaster prevention and response.

“Residents are not merely recipients of services; they are partners in protecting their communities. Timely reporting and active participation can help save lives and reduce disaster risks,” Xaba added.

Tool launched amid recurring weather emergencies

The chatbot comes as eThekwini continues to deal with weather-related emergencies, including flooding, severe storms and fires.

These incidents can put lives and property at risk, making timely communication between residents and emergency services particularly important.

Director of Disaster Management Vincent Ngubane said the new platform would help address communication gaps between communities and municipal services.

“This innovation strengthens communication between communities and the municipality, improves early reporting and response, and empowers residents to become active partners in protecting lives, property and the environment,” he said.

How to access the eThekwini chatbot

Residents who want to use the new Disaster Management chatbot can scan the QR code on the poster accompanying the municipality’s announcement.

The platform is intended to provide access to emergency reporting and critical safety information through WhatsApp.

The municipality hopes the service will encourage earlier reporting, improve communication and help communities prepare for potential disasters.
