20 Arrested in Limpopo for Election-Related Offences Including Ballot Photos and Fraud
Police in Limpopo have arrested 20 people for offences including electoral fraud, assault, and photographing ballot papers during the 2026 elections.
Crackdown on Election Day Offences
The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported that 33 cases linked to the elections were registered throughout the province over the period from 2 to 4 November. The reported offences include:
- Contraventions of the Electoral Act 73 of 1998
- Fraud
- Common assault
- Malicious damage to property
- Pointing of a firearm
Of particular concern were incidents in which voters were alleged to have taken photos of their marked ballots and shared them on social media. Police have emphasized that this conduct is strictly prohibited under electoral law, as it threatens both the secrecy and integrity of the voting process.
SAPS Responds to Unlawful Conduct
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, SAPS spokesperson, noted that officers swiftly responded to reports of various forms of unlawful conduct at voting stations. This proactive approach led to the opening of multiple criminal cases and the subsequent arrest of suspects across Limpopo.
“Such conduct is prohibited in terms of electoral legislation and undermines the secrecy and integrity of the voting process,” Ledwaba stated.
Maintaining Order and Safety
The arrests form part of ongoing efforts from law enforcement to uphold electoral laws and ensure that both voters and officials are protected. These operations are coordinated in partnership with multiple agencies tasked with safeguarding the democratic process during the election period.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, has commended the police and auxiliary agencies for their collaborative work throughout the elections. He highlighted the significance of such partnerships in maintaining order and protecting the integrity of the voting process for all involved.
“He applauded the collective efforts, dedication and cooperation demonstrated by all role players, highlighting the importance of partnerships and coordinated efforts in safeguarding communities, voters and election officials,” said Ledwaba.
Suspects in Court, SAPS Sends Strong Message
While some of the arrested suspects have already begun appearing in court, the police have reiterated their zero-tolerance approach to any breach of electoral regulations. Scheepers stressed that SAPS will not hesitate to act against offenders regardless of their position or political affiliation, ensuring that all incidents are investigated thoroughly and prosecuted in line with the law.
“Lieutenant General Scheepers reiterated that SAPS will not hesitate to take action against anyone who violates the law, irrespective of their position or affiliation, and that all reported cases will be attended to in accordance with the law,” Ledwaba confirmed.
Secure Voting Process Remains Top Priority
The 2026 Local Government Elections have brought additional scrutiny to electoral security, with authorities emphasizing the role of law enforcement in protecting democratic processes. The efforts of the police and other agencies are seen as vital in fostering public confidence and upholding the legitimacy of election outcomes.
While specific details of each offence have not been released, the unified response from SAPS and partner agencies underscores their commitment to ensuring any election-related incidents are met with appropriate legal action and that public safety remains paramount throughout the election period.
