South Africa is preparing for a crucial political moment as President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to attend the announcement of the final results of the 2026 Local Government Elections on Sunday, 8 November.

The announcement, scheduled for 18:00 at the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Results Operations Centre at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng, will officially conclude a closely watched electoral process.

Ramaphosa will attend in his capacity as President of the Republic and deliver brief remarks during the ceremony, which will be broadcast live.

The announcement comes four days after millions of registered voters headed to the polls on Wednesday, 4 November, to elect representatives responsible for governing municipalities across the country.

All eyes on the final results

The 2026 local government elections have been an important test for political parties competing for control of South Africa’s municipalities.

Unlike national elections, where voters choose representatives for Parliament and provincial legislatures, local government elections directly influence who makes decisions about services affecting communities every day.

From water supply and electricity to refuse collection, road maintenance and municipal infrastructure, the incoming councils will face expectations to deliver tangible improvements.

Special voting took place on 2 and 3 November, allowing eligible voters who qualified for the process to cast their ballots ahead of election day.

The final announcement will provide clarity on how political parties performed across the country’s municipalities and which will have the numbers needed to govern.
