Fuel Price Relief on the Horizon: Petrol and Diesel Prices Set to Drop in April

South Africans could be in for some relief at the pumps next month, as early indicators suggest a significant decrease in fuel prices for April 2025. According to data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), both petrol and diesel prices are expected to drop, thanks to a stronger rand and lower international oil prices.
Expected Fuel Price Adjustments for April 2025
As of Tuesday, 4 March, here are the latest projected fuel price changes:
Fuel Type | Expected Price Change (per litre) |
---|---|
Petrol 93 | Decrease of 60 cents |
Petrol 95 | Decrease of 73 cents |
Diesel 0.05% | Decrease of 72 cents |
Diesel 0.005% | Decrease of 75 cents |
Illuminating Paraffin | Decrease of 65 cents |
While these are early estimates, final fuel price adjustments will be confirmed later in the month, with new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 1 April 2025.
Why Are Fuel Prices Dropping?
South Africa’s fuel prices are mainly influenced by two factors:
- International Oil Prices – The price of Brent crude oil has fallen to $69.75 per barrel, the lowest level since 2021.
- Rand/Dollar Exchange Rate – The rand has shown strength against the dollar, currently sitting at R18.30/$.
Both these factors contribute to a reduction in the cost of importing fuel, leading to the projected decreases in petrol and diesel prices.

What This Means for Motorists
If these price decreases hold, South Africans will see some financial relief at the pumps. However, fluctuations in global oil prices and exchange rates could still impact the final adjustments.
Until the official fuel price announcement is made, motorists are encouraged to drive efficiently and plan fuel expenses wisely.
