HP’s Gaming Garage Initiative Set to Fuel Africa’s Booming Gaming Industry

The gaming industry in Africa is poised for significant growth, thanks to initiatives like HP’s Gaming Garage. As part of its commitment to accelerate digital equity for 150 million Africans by 2030, HP is working to bridge the gap between enthusiasm and knowledge in the gaming and esports sectors. This initiative is particularly impactful in South Africa, where the gaming industry is rapidly expanding and offering new career opportunities for the youth.
The Rise of Gaming in Africa
Globally, gaming has evolved from a hobby to a lifestyle, and Africa is no exception. South Africa, home to 26.5 million gamers, is at the forefront of this transformation. The country’s esports industry revenue is expected to reach 26.4million(approximatelyR473million) in 2024 and 34.9 million (over R500 million) by 2029. This growth positions gaming and esports as a powerful yet underutilized pathway to combat youth unemployment and foster digital innovation.
HP Gaming Garage: Bridging the Skills Gap
Launched globally in 2021, the HP Gaming Garage Esports Management and Gaming Development Academy is a free online platform designed to equip students with the skills needed to succeed in the gaming and esports industries. Hosted on edX, the platform offers 82 modules in 12 languages, including Swahili and French, covering areas such as:
- Esports Management
- Game Design
- Game Programming
- Gen AI Game Development
“We are fuelling the next generation of professionals,” said Yesh Surjoodeen, Managing Director of Southern and Central Africa at HP. “By providing free access to essential skills, we are helping young people turn their passion for gaming into viable career paths.”
Addressing Barriers to Entry
One of the biggest challenges facing aspiring gamers is the high cost of education. According to HP’s report, free courses like HP Gaming Garage play a vital role in making gaming education accessible. The report also highlights the need for formal institutions to promote careers in gaming and esports by bridging the information gap and adapting learning materials to meet the rising interest among youth.
Empowering South African Youth
South Africa’s gaming industry offers lucrative opportunities, with anticipated entry-level salaries ranging from R10,000 to R30,000 per month (R120,000 to R360,000 annually), depending on skills and qualifications. This is well above the national minimum wage of approximately R5,000 per month and aligns with the average South African salary of just under R26,800 per month. For those pursuing tech careers, the average IT sector salary of R840,000 per year presents an even more attractive opportunity.
GameOn with HP Gaming Garage Hackathon
To further support emerging talent, HP launched the GameOn with HP Gaming Garage hackathon on Heritage Day 2024. The challenge invited South African university students to design a game that combines culture, creativity, and coding, with a theme centered on celebrating South Africa’s rich heritage. The top 10 teams will showcase their games at the rAge Expo, South Africa’s premier gaming event, where three winners will be recognized.
A Commitment to Digital Equity
HP’s initiatives are part of its broader goal to accelerate digital equity for 150 million people by 2030. By partnering with educational institutions and government agencies, HP is raising awareness about opportunities in the gaming industry and providing the tools needed to succeed.
“HP’s report showcases the appetite of South Africans for accessible streams of education in this space,” said Mayank Dhingra, Senior Education Business Leader at HP. “HP Gaming Garage is bridging a pivotal gap by connecting students directly with industry experts through workshops and internship placements.”
The gaming industry in Africa, particularly in South Africa, is on the brink of a major transformation. With initiatives like HP’s Gaming Garage, the continent is well-positioned to harness the potential of gaming and esports to drive economic growth, combat youth unemployment, and foster digital innovation. By equipping the next generation with the skills they need, HP is not only powering up the gaming industry but also shaping the future of Africa’s digital economy.
