Two BET nods for Tyla’s ‘Chanel’ as the song’s viral momentum grows

Tyla has received two nominations at the 2026 BET Awards for her single “Chanel”, landing places in the Video of the Year and Viewer’s Choice categories.

Where the nominations sit

The nominations were announced ahead of the show, which is scheduled to air live on Sunday, June 28, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will be hosted by comedian Druski.

How ‘Chanel’ reached this point

The single was released in October 2025, with its music video released on the same day. The track became a viral sensation, helped by a TikTok dance challenge that spread across markets including Asia and the Middle East.

The music video drew attention in fashion circles for its use of archival Chanel pieces sourced from collectors and vintage dealers. The video was styled by Tyla’s longtime stylist Ron Hartleben, who spoke about the difficulty and cost of sourcing the garments.

“The rental costs for these things are astronomical… She’s wearing these belts that are each like $20,000 (over R16,000) at full retail,” Hartleben said, adding that many collectors trusted the team with “museum-quality pieces” and that he had to “sign my life away in case things broke. But nothing broke!”

Commercial performance and certifications

Beyond its viral spread, “Chanel” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 94, marking Tyla’s third solo entry on the chart after “Water” and “Push 2 Start”. The song also debuted at number one on both the US and UK Afrobeats charts simultaneously, with Tyla becoming the first artist to achieve that at the same time. In April 2026, the single was certified Gold in the United States by the RIAA.

Competition in the categories

The Video of the Year category includes nominations for artists such as Ella Mai, Doechii, Mariah the Scientist, Teyana Taylor, Kehlani, T.I., SZA and Kendrick Lamar, alongside Tyla. The Viewer’s Choice category features a lineup that includes Bruno Mars, Cardi B, Chris Brown feat. Bryson Tiller, Clipse feat. Kendrick Lamar, Dave & Tems, Kehlani, Mariah the Scientist, Metro Boomin feat. Quavo and others, with Tyla also among the nominees.

What this means

The dual nominations reflect both the song’s streaming and social-media impact and the high-profile nature of its visual presentation. As the BET Awards approach, Tyla’s “Chanel” remains one of the year’s most talked-about releases.
