In a momentous achievement, Johannesburg-born singer Tyla secured a Grammy Award for her song, Water. EWN reports that the South African artist clinched the Best African Music Performance in the category’s inaugural year at the 66th Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The SA citizen faced formidable competition, with nominees including Burna Boy and Ayra Starr. Expressing her disbelief and gratitude, Tyla, now a Grammy winner at 22, acknowledged the transformative power of the past year.
“If you don’t know me, my name is Tyla from South Africa, and last year, God decided to change my whole life. So, thank you so much to God, thank you to my team, and my family. “I know my mother’s crying somewhere in here. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category – it’s so important.”
