Afrikaner woman shares cost of moving to the US as a refugee

An Afrikaner woman who recently settled in Texas has sparked widespread discussion after sharing a breakdown of the costs involved in relocating to the United States through the refugee resettlement programme.

As reported by Briefly, the woman, who runs the Facebook page Life in Austin, posted a video explaining which expenses applicants are responsible for and which are covered as part of the resettlement process. Her post has attracted thousands of views, with many South Africans asking questions about what life looks like after arrival.

Most relocation costs are covered

According to the woman, the majority of relocation expenses are subsidised once applicants have been approved for resettlement.

She explained that families are generally responsible for obtaining essential documents before departure, including passports, unabridged birth certificates and, where applicable, marriage, divorce or death certificates. Applicants also need to cover travel costs for medical examinations and interviews linked to the US immigration process.

While these expenses can add up, she said they are relatively small compared to the overall cost of moving overseas.

One expense that remains after arrival is the cost of airfare. She explained that every adult signs an agreement to repay the price of their flight to the US. In her family’s case, she pays about $70 per month, while her husband repays $71 per month.

She added that repayments only begin six months after arriving in the US, allowing newly arrived families time to settle and secure employment.

Who is eligible?

The refugee programme is not open to everyone.

According to the eligibility criteria shared in the video, applicants must be South African citizens who are Afrikaners or members of another racial minority, currently live in South Africa and be able to demonstrate that they have experienced, or have a well-founded fear of, persecution based on factors such as race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group.

Applicants must also be at least 18 years old unless they are applying with a parent.

Social media users had plenty of questions

The video quickly generated conversation online, with many South Africans wanting clarity about the process.

Some viewers asked whether the monthly flight repayments are interest-free, while others shared their own experiences of delays in obtaining documents from the Department of Home Affairs.

One commenter said they arrived in the US without an unabridged birth certificate after waiting months for the document to be issued, highlighting one of the practical challenges some applicants face before leaving South Africa.

A topic that continues to divide opinion

The video has sparked discussion among South Africans, with many viewers seeking clarity on the refugee resettlement process, repayment of flight costs and the documentation required before relocating to the United States.
