The ANC has unveiled a new 45-member Gauteng Provincial Task Team (PTT), with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi re-appointed as Provincial Convenor in a late-night announcement aimed at arresting the party’s decline in the province ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Who made the announcement and why

The move was announced late on Wednesday by the ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, who introduced the 45-member PTT as a “decisive intervention” to rebuild the organisation. Mbalula said: “The task team has clear terms of reference to rebuild the organisation and provide strategic leadership.”

Key appointments in the new structure

The newly appointed structure places Panyaza Lesufi solely in charge of the provincial leadership as Provincial Convenor. He is deputised by Mandla Nkomfe.

Sochayile “Socks” Khanyile was appointed Provincial Coordinator, replacing Hope Papo, while Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, the Social Development MEC, becomes deputy coordinator. Tasneem Motara was named fundraiser for the rebuilding campaign.

Veteran leader Amos Masondo has been appointed as an additional member. The list of 45 also includes Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero.

Context: electoral decline and internal turmoil

The restructuring comes after a bruising 2024 election for the ANC in Gauteng, where the party recorded a historic low of 34% in the province. The appointment of the PTT is presented by the national leadership as a response to months of internal turmoil and a weakening support base.

What the ANC says it will do

The ANC describes the PTT’s task as restoring discipline, accelerating renewal and reconnecting the party with frustrated communities, with the structure to provide strategic leadership as it prepares for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
