Four killed in head-on collision on R101 as ZCC members head home from Moria

Four people died in a head-on collision involving two vehicles on the R101 outside Mokopane on Sunday, September 27, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed.

Crash details and immediate response

The two vehicles collided head-on before a third vehicle became involved in the resulting pile-up. The identities and genders of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.

The department said it will send a team of specialists to investigate the cause of the crash.

Official condolences

Tshifhiwa Dali, spokesperson for the Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, said MEC Nakedi Kekana had learned of the crash with shock.

“On behalf of myself and the Limpopo Provincial Government, I wish to send my deepest condolences to the families of those who departed and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Kekana said.

Traffic conditions as ZCC members travelled from Moria

The accident occurred as authorities at the Nyl Plaza tollgate temporarily opened the gates to allow southbound vehicles to pass, easing congestion caused by high traffic volumes. More than 1,000 vehicles were passing through the Nyl Plaza tollgate outside Modimolle while members of the Saint Engenas ZCC who had gathered at Moria began making their way home.

The department’s statement referenced a separate, fatal collision last month on the N1 freeway outside Polokwane in which a motorist died and 12 South African Police Service members were injured. That crash occurred near Astron Filling Station and involved a northbound sedan and a SAPS minibus, which subsequently caught fire, the department said.

Authorities said the sedan allegedly veered out of its lane before colliding with the SAPS minibus; the sedan driver died and the injured SAPS members were taken to various medical facilities across the province for treatment.
