Fifth suspect arrested for Thabo Bester's prison escape due in court

Another suspect has been arrested for aiding the escape of Thabo Bester and is due to appear in court on Thursday morning. The 51-year-old suspect is a security guard working for G4S, the company responsible for running the Mangaung maximum security prison where Bester was serving a life sentence. He faces charges of assisting Bester’s escape and defeating the ends of justice. This latest arrest brings the total number of individuals charged with the escape to five, as reported by Eyewitness News.

Bester escaped from the prison in May of last year, and his escape sparked a thorough investigation by the police. Nandipha Magudumana, a celebrity doctor and Bester’s accomplice were also recently charged with aiding and abetting Bester’s escape, along with her father, Zolile Sekeleni. Two G4S employees, Senohe Matsoara and the latest suspect, have also been arrested for their involvement, alongside Teboho Lipholo, a contracted camera installer.

The police have faced criticism for their slow investigation into Bester’s escape, and the latest arrests show that they are determined to hold those responsible accountable. The investigation is ongoing, and the police anticipate more arrests.
