Gautrain marks 16 years, surpasses 216 million passenger trips
The Gautrain has marked 16 years of operation, celebrating a milestone of more than 216 million passenger trips since it launched on 8 June 2010. The rapid rail network began service shortly before the 2010 FIFA World Cup and has become an important part of Gauteng’s public transport provision.
Network and services
The system operates an 80km rail network with 10 stations. It is supported by an integrated bus and midi-bus feeder service, including a partnership with the minibus taxi industry via the Gautrain Midi-bus Service, designed to help thousands of passengers travel daily and ease congestion across the province.
Affordability measures and usage
In 2025 Gautrain introduced the KlevaMova affordability programme, which offers qualifying passengers a 50% discount on train fares. The programme targets households earning R350 000 or less annually, as well as pensioners, scholars and SASSA disability grant beneficiaries. According to the Gautrain Management Agency, KlevaMova now accounts for approximately 11% of all Gautrain passenger trips.
Innovation and passenger services
The Gautrain has expanded services through innovation and partnerships. The network has introduced smart Driver’s Licence Testing Centres at selected stations as part of those service developments.
Governance and next phase
The Gautrain Management Agency said the rail system continues to play an important role in improving mobility and supporting economic activity in Gauteng. The agency is overseeing a transition to a new concessionaire while maintaining the public–private partnership model that underpinned operations since inception. The railway is now fully owned by the Gauteng Provincial Government after the original concession agreement ended.
Leadership view
“Gautrain stands as a lasting legacy of what South Africa can achieve when it invests boldly in infrastructure that serves people for generations. It is more than a transport system – it is a catalyst for economic activity and sustainable mobility,” said Gautrain Management Agency Board Chairperson Professor Mfanelo Ntsobi.
As the Gautrain enters its next phase of development, the agency said its focus remains on delivering safe, reliable and efficient transport.
