Police Launch Manhunt for Suspects Who Fatally Shot Officer in Pretoria

Police are on the hunt for suspects who shot at Pretoria police, killing one officer over the weekend. According to spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the incident occurred in Mabopane when four officers were fired upon during a crime prevention patrol.

Sergeant Holeng Makobe tragically died in the barrage of bullets while his colleagues sustained injuries. The three constables are currently in the process of recovery at a hospital. The suspects involved in the shooting reportedly fled the scene in a maroon Golf 1.

Mathe urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111, stressing that all provided information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

This incident comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to end police killings. He addressed this issue at a remembrance ceremony honouring 34 officers who lost their lives over the past year.

Ramaphosa disclosed that 30 slain officers were men, and four were women. Their names are on the Memorial Wall at the Union Buildings.

The President highlighted the need to prevent police officer attacks and called for justice for the victims’ families. Ramaphosa also urged the police management to improve officers’ well-being.

This crime is not an isolated case. Lieutenant-Colonel Frans Mathipa was shot and killed on August 6 while driving on the N1 near the Hammanskraal toll plaza. He was an investigator for the Gauteng Hawks’ organised severe crime unit and was on duty then.

In June, a Hawks’ technical operation management member was killed in a shoot-out during a Mamelodi operation, resulting in three suspects’ deaths.
