In a recent incident, a two-storey building on 44 Nugget Street in the Johannesburg CBD went up in flames during a lover’s quarrel. EWN reports that Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda disclosed that the structure has no owner. This revelation surfaced during a media briefing held two days after the tragic blaze that claimed the lives of two people and displaced 160 others.

The woman accused of initiating the fire has been arrested. She will appear in court on Tuesday. As investigations unfold, city officials are looking into 188 cases of hijacked buildings across Johannesburg, with Gwamanda highlighting that an eviction order against the illegal occupants was issued in 2023. However, the case was dismissed because the alleged building owners failed to provide sufficient information proving ownership, making the building the city’s responsibility.
