Madlanga Commission in talks with Presidency over deadline extension

The Madlanga Commission has opened discussions with the Presidency about a possible extension to its deadlines as commissioners race to finish a heavy programme of witnesses and evidence.

Commission confirms talks with Presidency

Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed on Tuesday that the inquiry is “in engagement with the Presidency”. He made the remark to journalists on the sidelines of the commission’s proceedings as it contends with a demanding workload.

Intense pressure as hearings approach conclusion

Michaels said commissioners remain under significant pressure while they work through a lengthy list of witnesses and evidence. He told reporters:

“The Commission has consistently said that it is under huge pressure. There is quite a bit that the Commission needs to get through in terms of witnesses, testimony,”

Deadlines in focus

The public hearings are due to conclude on July 31, and the commission is expected to submit its final report by August 31. Michaels acknowledged the challenge of meeting that timetable, saying:

“On our current deadline of August 31, there is no doubt that it is highly pressurised,”

and confirming the commission was engaging the Presidency over a possible extension.

President says he will consider a request

President Cyril Ramaphosa said he would consider any formal request for more time. Speaking on Monday at the Chris Hani Regional Volunteers Launch at Qamata Great Place in Cofimvaba, Ramaphosa said:

“I am very pleased with the work that is being done with the Madlanga Commission. It may well be that they need a little bit more time and I’ll listen to that request if it comes,”

signalling openness to granting additional time if commissioners determine it is necessary.

The commission’s engagements with the Presidency and the tight schedule underline the pressure on the inquiry as it moves toward the end of public hearings and the submission of its final report.
