Michael van Wyk, the chief executive officer of Medicare24, is scheduled to give evidence at the Madlanga Commission on Monday, June 22 over a cancelled R360-million South African Police Service (SAPS) health risk management tender.

Appearance confirmed, but uncertain

The commission confirmed that Van Wyk is due to testify, with Chief Evidence Leader Adv. Matthew Chaskalson SC leading the evidence. Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed Van Wyk’s scheduling but reports say his appearance may still be delayed.

Media reports indicate Van Wyk may apply for a postponement, saying important documents were only provided to him recently and that he needs more time to prepare.

Probe centres on a cancelled R360-million contract

The Madlanga Commission’s examination of the matter focuses on the cancelled R360-million SAPS tender in Tshwane. Medicare24’s involvement in that tender has attracted scrutiny as part of the broader inquiry.

Links, previous evidence and wider allegations

Prior testimony before the commission has connected Van Wyk with alleged crime figure Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala and with suspended acting EMPD commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi. The commission has also heard evidence involving voice notes, WhatsApp messages, the use of blue lights, municipal resources and controversial agreements allegedly used to advance private interests.

Consequences and law-enforcement action

Investigations into the tender have already led to arrests and the suspension of senior police officers. The cancelled Medicare24 contract remains a central focus for investigators and for the commission’s continuing hearings.

What to watch for

  • Whether Van Wyk’s testimony goes ahead as scheduled or is postponed.
  • Further evidence linking private actors and police officials to the cancelled tender.
  • Any follow-up actions by investigators stemming from commission testimony.
