Property developer Abland is defying the challenging economic climate in South Africa. BusinessTech reports that he’s planning big new shopping malls for Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria. Two will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Despite the widespread impact of the economic downturn on various sectors, Abland remains committed to driving growth and development. The company is focusing on constructing the Eyethu Shopping Centre in Soweto, a 10,000 sqm retail space set to open in the fourth quarter of 2023. The centre will feature prominent anchor tenants such as Shoprite, Clicks Pharmacy, OBC Chicken, and various national fashion retailers, as well as food offerings, including a Chicken Licken Fly-Thru. Trading will commence on 26 October 2023.

Expanding its reach in Gauteng, Abland has ambitious plans for the Mopane View Retail Mall in Soshanguve, which is currently in the planning stage. Spanning an impressive 24,000 sqm, this mall will become a cornerstone of the Mopane Precinct, located on the busy intersection corner of the M35 and M39 in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.

Abland is also actively pursuing several other retail projects across the country. These include developing 8,000 sqm convenience retail outlets in Fourways and a 35,000 sqm shopping centre in Durbanville, Cape Town. The Groot Phesantekraal Shopping Centre, situated on the corner of Okavango Road and the R312, Klipheuwel Road, will be set on one of the oldest farms in the Durbanville region. It is expected to open its doors in the third quarter of 2024.

Notably, the trend in these upcoming retail developments is a shift toward more remote areas outside the bustling urban centres. Rural retail experienced significant growth in 2022, marked by the opening smaller-scale shopping malls (around 10,000 sqm) in rural regions. This trend continues unabated, with developers pushing forward with their projects and keeping an array of new ventures in the pipeline for the coming years. Despite the economic challenges, Abland remains committed to driving progress and bringing modern retail experiences to diverse communities throughout South Africa.
