Postbank urges remaining SASSA gold card holders to switch before August 31 deadline

With the August 31 cut-off days away, Postbank has made a final appeal to almost 80,000 social grant beneficiaries who still need to migrate from SASSA gold cards to Postbank black cards. The bank warned the deadline will not be extended and urged beneficiaries to complete the migration as soon as possible to avoid interruptions to their grant payments.

Where the outstanding migrations are

Postbank said more than 1.8 million beneficiaries have already migrated to black cards since the process began in 2025. The latest migration phase, which started in April 2026, targeted about 420,000 beneficiaries; Postbank said fewer than 80,000 remain.

The bank provided a provincial breakdown of the outstanding migrations: KwaZulu‑Natal accounts for about 20,000 remaining beneficiaries, the Western Cape about 17,000, the Eastern Cape about 15,000 and Gauteng about 14,000.

Postbank’s appeal and operational measures

Postbank chief commercial officer Thami Cele said the bank wanted to make sure beneficiaries did not experience interruptions to payments. In full, he said:

“Our priority as a state-owned bank that is responsible for financial inclusion is to ensure that no single beneficiary experiences any interruptions to their grant payments that we know they deeply depend on. ”We understand that grant payments are an important source of livelihood for many families, and we want to ensure that no one is unnecessarily inconvenienced; hence we are making this final special appeal to all remaining beneficiaries to complete their migration within the less than five-day period that is left,”

To cope with increased demand in the final days, Postbank said it had introduced additional operational measures at card replacement sites and that most sites would remain open for a period after the deadline to assist those who miss the cut-off.

What happens if you miss August 31

Postbank emphasised that beneficiaries who miss the deadline will still receive their social grant payments and that their accounts will remain active after August 31. However, those beneficiaries will have to complete their migration to a black card before they can access their funds.

Postbank again urged beneficiaries to migrate before the deadline to avoid disruptions and the inconvenience of delayed access to services.

How and where to switch

Beneficiaries can switch at Postbank card replacement sites located inside selected retailers, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar. The migration process is free; beneficiaries need a valid ID or temporary ID.

Cards can be collected from any province, even if different from the province where the SASSA grant was approved. Postbank said black cards work immediately after they are issued and beneficiaries do not need to visit a SASSA office or complete any forms. Any balance on a gold card will automatically carry over to the black card and become accessible.
