Ramaphosa ‘booked off’ ahead of scheduled parliamentary appearance

President Cyril Ramaphosa has been booked off from public engagements after falling ill following his return from the BRICS Summit in India, the Presidency confirmed on Wednesday, 16 September.

Parliament’s programme shows that Ramaphosa was scheduled to appear before the National Assembly to answer oral questions, including questions concerning government credibility, municipal accountability and basic services.

The Presidency said Ramaphosa, who returned to South Africa on Monday, 14 September, had been advised by his medical team to rest and recover. No further details about the nature of his illness were provided.

The announcement comes shortly after the President attended the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from 12 to 13 September. South Africa used the summit to pursue closer trade and investment ties within the bloc, alongside broader discussions on global governance and economic cooperation.

Ministers to step in for scheduled engagements

For public engagements already on the calendar, the Presidency said the relevant ministers would represent the President where possible.

Ramaphosa had a busy international schedule in India, including BRICS leaders’ sessions and business discussions focused on trade, investment and cooperation between South Africa and other member states.

The Presidency has not indicated how long Ramaphosa will remain away from public engagements. The development is also being watched closely in South Africa as the President had several official duties scheduled following his return from the summit.

For now, the official message remains that he is resting on medical advice.
