According to EWN, Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda, in discussion with 702’s Clement Manyathela, revealed that the initial plan to start repairs on December 1 had hit a roadblock. The mayor explained that their request to declare the incident a disaster, which would have facilitated access to funds from the national government for complete reconstruction, was declined.

Gwamanda stated they are now navigating the challenge by repurposing funds within various city departments to proceed with the repairs.
