May your pockets be full: SASSA confirms May 2026 grant payment dates and amounts

For millions of South Africans, the first week of the month means one thing: checking the calendar, planning groceries and stretching every rand wisely. Now, the South African Social Security Agency has confirmed when May 2026 social grants will be paid.

The agency, which supports more than 19 million beneficiaries, says payments will begin in the first week of May. For many households, these grants are not just assistance they are the difference between coping and going without.

SASSA May 2026 payment dates

Beneficiaries can expect payments on the following dates:

  • Older Persons Grant: Wednesday, 6 May 2026
  • Disability Grant: Thursday, 7 May 2026
  • Children’s Grants: Friday, 8 May 2026

As usual, SASSA encourages people not to rush to withdraw funds on the first day, as money remains available after the payout date. That message is especially important in busy urban centres and smaller towns where long queues often form outside ATMs and retailers.

Current SASSA grant amounts

Here is what beneficiaries are set to receive in May:

  • Old Age Grant (60–74 years): R2 315
  • Old Age Grant (75+ years): R2 335
  • Disability Grant: R2 315
  • War Veterans Grant: R2 315
  • Care Dependency Grant: R2 315
  • Child Support Grant: R560
  • Foster Care Grant: R1 250
  • SRD Grant: R370

These amounts remain a lifeline in communities where unemployment and rising food prices continue to place pressure on family budgets.

Relief as SASSA online portal returns

There is also good news for beneficiaries who use digital services. SASSA says its self-service portal is back online after technical problems affected users trying to complete eLife Certification.

The agency said system integration issues with other government departments caused delays and disrupted access. That led to frustration for users who hoped to avoid transport costs and long waits at local branches.

Now that the portal is functioning again, beneficiaries with internet access are being urged to use the online system where possible.

Why life certification matters

Life certification is a required process under the Social Assistance Act. It helps confirm that grants are being paid to legitimate recipients and prevents fraud within the system.

SASSA warned that if a beneficiary does not complete required verification, the agency may assume the person is no longer eligible or may have passed away. That could interrupt payments.

The bigger picture for South Africans

Every month, grant dates trend on social media because they matter deeply in everyday life. Pensioners plan transport, parents budget for school lunches and caregivers prepare household expenses around these payments.

In many homes, one grant supports several people. That is why reliability matters as much as the amount itself.

For now, May’s dates are locked in and for millions of South Africans, that brings a little certainty in uncertain times.
