Suliman Carrim skips Madlanga commission hearing again, citing ill health

Businessman Suliman Carrim withdrew from a scheduled appearance at the Madlanga Commission after his legal team told the inquiry he was unwell. He had been due to continue his testimony on Thursday.

Withdrawal and the commission’s response

Carrim’s legal team informed the commission on Wednesday that he was currently unwell. The commission’s spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels, told journalists the commission would consider Carrim’s claims of ill health when proceedings resume.

“The last time Mr Carrim was meant to appear before the commission, he couldn’t due to ill health. It seems his condition persists. As far as tomorrow’s proceedings are concerned, we will deal with Mr Carrim’s matter tomorrow morning.”

Michaels said the commission would continue with its scheduled work and that another witness would appear; “The details will be announced, but the commission is continuing with its work tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday certainly,” he said.

Health background

In April 2026, Carrim was rushed to hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack while at a gym in Johannesburg.

Context of Carrim’s testimony

Carrim’s testimony is part of a broader inquiry into alleged corruption and tender rigging. In March 2026, his application to give evidence in camera citing death threats failed after the evidence leader, Adila Hassim, opposed the request, saying the commission could protect him.

Allegations given during testimony

  • Carrim said he invested R10 million in Medicare24 Tshwane District.
  • The company reportedly secured a R360 million contract with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
  • Carrim alleged that Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, who is in custody awaiting trial, owes him R8 million.
  • He told the commission he made payments to Hangwani Maumela on Matlala’s behalf.

Next steps

The commission said it would address Carrim’s matter when proceedings resume. It continues to hear witnesses as part of its investigation.
