In a proactive operation, Johannesburg police thwarted a potential armed robbery in the Orlando policing precinct, Soweto, as they intercepted a group of suspected armed robbers travelling in three vehicles on Thursday.

Acting on information provided by Crime Intelligence, law enforcement arrested 11 suspects, aged between 33 and 43, according to SANews. They also confiscated three unlicensed firearms and ammunition and impounded the three vehicles allegedly intended for the planned robbery.

The South African Police Service revealed that they closely monitored the suspects and decided to take action before the planned robbery could occur along Mooki Street and the Soweto Highway. Remarkably, there were no gunshots during the arrests.

The suspects will face various charges. They include possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition and conspiracy to commit an armed robbery. The group will appear before the Orlando Magistrate’s Court in due course.
