Tanzanian authorities repatriated fugitives Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana to South Africa

Tanzanian authorities repatriated fugitives Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana to South Africa on a flight that landed earlier this morning. According to News24, they reportedly landed on a specially chartered flight at Johannesburg’s Lanseria airport around 03:00. The police transported them to separate prisons in different vehicles. Offices reportedly took Magudumana to Johannesburg Prison, and Bester headed to the Kgosi Mampuru II C-Max Prison in Pretoria.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the couple had returned to South Africa. The couple fled South Africa mid-March, and Tanzanian police apprehended them in Arusha, Tanzania, over the weekend. Their escape from the country came after GroundUp reported news of Bester’s prison escape in March 2023. Previously, Bester led local authorities to believe he had died in a fire in May 2022 at the Mangaung maximum-security prison where he once was incarcerated.

Police Minister Bheki Cele and Justice Minister Ronald Lamola plan to brief the media on the situation on Thursday morning.
