Three security guards arrested after viral e‑hailing attack in KwaNdengezi, The Citizen reports
According to The Citizen, police have arrested three security guards linked to a taxi association after a violent confrontation with an e‑hailing driver was captured on video and circulated online, prompting an investigation and public concern.
What happened
According to The Citizen, the incident occurred on Wednesday morning, 3 June, on the MR518 road in KwaNdengezi when the e‑hailing driver was reportedly blocked by two security vehicles. The driver was followed and one of the security guards’ vehicles bumped his car, causing it to come to a standstill.
The Citizen reports that, at that point, one of the security guards allegedly shot the tyre of the e‑hailing vehicle while the other two allegedly assaulted the driver. Police officers who were in the vicinity rescued the driver, the publication said.
Arrests and charges
According to The Citizen, police handcuffed the three men in KwaNdengezi on Thursday. The guards, aged 28, 41 and 49, face charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and assault, the report said. Police in KwaNdengezi contacted representatives of the taxi association, who cooperated and brought the affected security guards to the police station, The Citizen added.
Police response and investigation
The Citizen quotes Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba emphasising limits on the role of security companies and firearm use. Makoba warned that security firms must only provide services within their PSIRA mandates and that no one has the right to stop someone from transporting passengers in their vehicle.
“Security guards and anyone who owns a firearm must use firearms as stipulated in the Firearms Control Act. Our investigations will also go into the security company implicated in the incident and conduct a compliance inspection. Three firearms were confiscated and will be taken to ballistics for analysis,” said Makoba.
Police confiscated three firearms and sent them for ballistics analysis, and investigations are continuing, The Citizen reported.
